BENIN CITY-Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki has been commended for his efforts at improving on the education sector in the state through the provisions of infrastructural facilities and creating the enabling environment for learning
An educationist and the proprietor of one of the leading private school in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State ,Mr Gabriel Okhihan made the commendation while speaking to the press on the performance of the state on the recently release of the last West Africa Examination Council (waec)
He said to raise the standard of education in the country ,it requires the collective efforts of both the government and the parents,while the government provides the needed infrastructures ,qualified personel and conducive enabling environment for learning ,the parents on their own should also collaborate the efforts as well in ensuring the monitoring and provision for the needs of their children
On the performance of the student in the just released 2022 waec result ,Mr Okhihan said the waec result for the year 2022 was just too okay and fantastic using Brano High School as an example ,the record the school has kept over the years is as a result of the hard work and dedication of the teachers as it keeps improving every year
While also speaking on the reduction of the cut off marks into the Universities by Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) across the country, he said in his opinion what the people need to know is that JAMB has set a standard for the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education to follow adding that it is not binding on these institutions, that the cut off marks by the educational body is just to ensure that the institutions does not go below what they have given and they can decide to peg their own cut off marks depending on the course of study
He subsequent added that his school(Brano High School) has continue to dominate and excel in academic activities both in Egor and across the state as a result of God’s favour ,hardwork and the quality of teachers that are employed “I ensure from time to time ,I train and retrain ,provide the enabling environment for them to put in their best and lastly increase their take home pay ,all these are motivating factors for them to put in their best and all the teachers are all graduate with some having masters degree.We also try as much as possible to follow the Nigeria curriculum “.he added
“The School has been excelling and winning awards from 2017 till date, there is no year the pupils from the school does not win an award ,we have been winning the Independent Television award consistently,quiz competition and in 2019 the school represented Edo State in the Seplat competition and won ,2020 Government selected 10 best student in the Junior WAEC and the top five (5) of the ten (10) student selected was from Brano High School and they have been enjoying the scholarship the Oil company gave to them till date.”
Continuing,Mr okhihan said recently an American based NGO know as” Men Be Safe” engaged schools in Nigeria ,Brano High School came out first ,second and third respectively with another school from Akwa Ibom state,this is an organization helping indegent students and persons across the globe to ensure they are educated through scholarship and a pupil from the school is already enjoying the privileged, scholarship from junior school to university level with the fees already paid.
He however used the opportunity to advise parents to have eyes on their children and monitor the kind of persons they are friends to and again always follow and check their academics works no matter how busy the schedule may be as the teachers can not do it all alone,it has to be a collaborative effort together.
