BENIN CITY-Sachet water hawkers in Oredo local government area of Edo State on Monday protested the 100% increase of price of tickets by the revenue collection department of Oredo local government from 50 naira to 150 naira.
It will be recalled that the revenue collection department of Oredo local government council had last week announce that the sale of a price of tickets for sachet water hawkers in the council area from 50 to 150 naira would take effect from Monday without recourse to the harsh economic realities in the State and beyond.
According to the protesting sachet water hawkers,the 100% increase from 50 to 150 naira was a confirmation that the administration of the current council boss was desirous of inflicting more hardship on the protesters .
The protesters further lamented that aside the regular daily 50 naira being paid,they were also subjected to payment of other tickets by way of revenue to the council.
Responding, the Head of Local Government Administration(HOLGA), Mr. Kensington Osifo advised the protesters to go about their normal businesses as the council had no plans to approve any change or increase in price of tickets for sachet water hawkers in the council.
He said that he was not aware of any increase and did not authorize any of such increase from 50 naira to 150 naira tickets price for sachet water hawkers who barely can eke out a living from selling sachet water in the council area.
He however advised the protesters to call a designated number belonging to the head of revenue department in the council whenever they were being compelled by revenue agents to buy the new 150 naira tickets.
Meanwhile, our correspondence on Monday confirmed the implementation and sales of the new ticket to sachet water hawkers in Oba market, Urhophota Hall axis of the council as they (sachet water hawkers) were compelled by revenue agents to pay additional 100 naira to the regular 50 naira being paid in the council area and its environs.
