BENIN CITY-The Edo State chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has said that the mob action on the streets in Benin City on Wednesday was a reaction to Mr Godwin Obaseki’s familiar path of perfidy , insensitivity, wickedness which is both anti-people and criminal.
This was part of the press statement by Col David Imuse rtd, Chairman ,All Progressive Congress Edo State at the party secretariat on Thursday 16th February 2023.
He pointed out that the party’s position was that the peaceful protest by the banking public was probably hijacked by sponsored political thugs of the disabled Obaseki led PDP government in Edo State
He noted that “there is no doubt that the public reaction followed the decision by Mr Godwin Obaseki to join forces with the anti-people elements, opposing the Supreme court ruling restraining the federal government from implementing the CBN’s February 10 deadline for the swamping of the old naira notes with new ones ”
The chairman added that the very erroneous decision by Godwin Obaseki to allign himself with the anti-people policy of the CBN amidst the plight and suffering of Edo people who are distraught over their inability to get cash from the banks further infuriated the people
Continuing Col Imuse said the action is typical of Mr Obaseki as a trade mark policy for wasting Edo tax payers funds through litigation ,which he noted that over the years has become the governor’s conduit pipe for siphoning the dwindling resources of Edo people even when he knows that his judicial adventures can run into ditches that will only bring embarrassment to the state .
He described the accusations by the governor through his aides that the former National Chairman and Immediate past governor Comrade Adams Oshiomhole instigated the protesters over cashless policy as funny , pointing out that Oshiomhole cannot instigate protests to distroyhis own legacies.
He subsequently added that Edo people know that the frustrated faction of the PDP,whose days are numbered in the state is responsible for the protests as it is coming days after the governor boasted that he has high level talks with CBN officials,the protesters were disappointed and it was compounded when they learnt of the governor’s stance on the Supreme court case.
The chairman noted that late last year ,the governor said the CBN decision was political and argued that as a self acclaimed economist ,the policy by the federal government and CBN has no basis , his words were ” this is purely political.there is nothing urgent in changing our currency today ”
He added that just last week Mr Obaseki swallowed his vomit and described CBN decision as the right one for the nation’s economy.
He noted that by taking side with CBN on this anti-people policy ,Mr Obaseki has finally unmasked himself as the real enemy of Edo people and that he has also gathered several POS operators who are his cronies and some bank officials to Government House with a directive that more monies be alloted to these operators for onward transmission to the SSG ,Osarodion Ogie for anticipated vote buying in the forthcoming general election
The Party Chairman used the occasion to sympathize with the good people of Edo state on the hardship being faced as a result of the currency redesign and for the family of those who lost their lives as a result of the protest and prayed God to give them the strength to bear the lost.
