The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) on Tuesday inducted 51 newly qualified doctors at the Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State, into the profession.
Dr. Fatima Kyari, the Registrar of the Council, who conducted the Oath of Hippocratic on the inductees, charged them to maintain all ethical standards of the profession.
Kyari, who was represented by the former Chief Medical Director of University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Eugene Okpere, said the council would not hesitate to sanction any practitioner found wanting in the discharge of the professional duty.
“Ensure you pay your practicing dues as at when due, respect your senior colleagues and ensure you have medical insurance”, he said
Earlier, Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, said the inductees at the 19th oath taking and induction ceremony were
products of culminated years of rigorous study, adding that the ceremony marks the beginning of their journey into the field of Medicine

He said the “David Class”, as the set was called, was joining the list of over 3000 medical doctors produced thus far by the College of Health Sciences of the institution.
“At today’s induction, a total of 51 Medical Doctors who have been found worthy in character and learning will be inducted during the ceremony.
“This aligns with the University’s unweaving commitment to excellence in the production of top-grade medical professionals required to bolster the healthcare delivery system in Nigeria, which is currently in dire straits.
“Undoubtedly, the world faces numerous healthcare challenges, ranging from emerging diseases to increasing burden of chronic illness.
“I have no doubt that you, the inductees, will rise to the occasion and contribute your quota to the health and well-being of your communities and the society at large”, Prof. Ezemonye said.
He urged the inductees to remember their Hippocratic Oath, as well as the guiding principles that have shaped the practice of Medicine for centuries.
According to the Vice-Chancellor: “The oath reminds you of your duty to preserve life, alleviate suffering, and treat all patients with compassion and respect.
“Igbinedion University has always been a beacon of excellence in education, and you are a testament to that tradition.

Dr. (Mrs.), Dean, School of Clinical Medicine of the University, while congratulating tgr new doctors, said medicine is life journey of learning, service, and compassion.
“Your success, as physicians, will not be measured solely by the diseases you treat, but by the humanity you bring to your work”, she maintained
In his induction lecture, Prof. King-David Terna Yawe, who bomoamed the rot in the health system, however, urged the inductees to imbibe the habit of continuous learning.
“Continue to learn by unlearning and re-learn, read, attend scientific meeting. Imbibe entrepreneurship spirit- it is not restricted to individual or group medical practice, locum tenens.
