Benin City – Twenty-eight cases came up for hearing before the Edo State Private Properties Protection Committee sitting today in Government House, Benin City while the investigative unit was busy with suspects held for various land grabbing cases.
Six commencements and several reports were also heard from Investigative teams of police officers on progress of investigations of cases in their charge.
Parties whose cases were at the stage of settlement also appeared before the Committee to give reports on terms of settlement and progress made.
Among arrested persons was HRH Osadebamwen Aghaghowa, Enogie of Oghede who was arrested on Friday, May 19, and was released on bail today.
The Enogie was arrested after several failed attempts to have him appear before the Committee to clear his role in the case of trespass and sale of property without authorization.
However, in his second case before the Committee, the Enogie reported to the Committee that he had relief when the Petitioner stated that he was willing to go to the Enogie’s Palace and resolve the matter involving him and the Enogie on one hand and with the Enogie’s younger brother on the other hand.
In that case, the Petitioner alleged that the Enogie allegedly sold land measuring 50ft by 100ft out of the initial 100ft by 100ft situate at Oghede Community. The Enogie acknowledged that the second Respondent, Uhunoma, was his younger brother but denied that he, Enogie, sold the Petitioner’s land.
The Committee told the Enogie that he should have made himself available when invited to appear before the Committee and charged him to ensure the matters were amicably resolved and to appear before the Committee to report on settlements.
Two new arrests were also made today in the case of Christopher Itsueli Vs Avbiugo Community. The Committee issued warrants of arrest against Messrs Jimoh Ibizugbe and Akome Idehen, Respondents, for their failure to appear before the Committee to sign the terms of settlement in that particular case.
As at the time of this report, additional statements were being taken from the two arrested men by a team of police investigators.
Sitting continues in Benin City.
