BENIN CITY- The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Sustainability, Mr. Jude Ekpu has said that Edo State Government is set to collaborate with National Council of Climate Change (NCCC) to curb its challenges
The Permanent Secretary who made this assertion while playing host to NCCC in Benin city, said the State Government through the Ministry of Environment and Sustainability would support the initiative of NCCC to curb challenges caused by Climate Change.
Mr. Jude Ekpu further highlighted the difficulties faced in securing funds for climate change initiatives, even as he emphasized the need for support from the NCCC in accessing resources.
The Permanent Secretary however Harped on the importance of providing alternative livelihoods for communities that depend on forest resources, such as firewood as it would help to reduce deforestation Pressures.
He added that the State faces significant challenges with deforestation, including issues relating to the Tonguia farming system and ineffective management of protected areas and the need for greater community involvement in conservation efforts.
“Empowering local communities to manage forest areas has not been successful. The State welcomes support for mangrove restoration projects, recognizing their crucial role in coastal protection and local economies”. He said.
Mr. Jude Ekpu further explained that lack of electricity in some communities is a contributing factor to deforestation, as people rely on firewood for fuel, noting that providing electricity would offer alternative economic opportunities and reduce pressure on natural resources.
On his part, the Director of Environmental Assessment and Climate Change, Kenneth Woghiren condemned the practice of Tonguia farming, stressing the need for farmers to stop having licenses that would help them expand their plantations, as most farmers are fond of killing trees.
Earlier, the delegate of NCCC, Mr. Michael Ivenso, Director for Strategy, Information and Planning explained that the purpose of the visit was to collaborate with the Ministry on climate change issues.
“Climate change is a global problem, but Climate action is local, It happens in the states, local governments and communities. It’s imperative for us at the Federal level to collaborate with our counterparts in the States, aligning national priorities with the specific needs of each region.” He said.
Mr. Micheal said that the NCCC intends to visit communities, understand their challenges, support them in developing and implementing climate change adaptation, mitigating strategies, preservation and restoration of mangrove ecosystems, recognizing their importance for coastal protection, biodiversity and local livelihoods.
