Benin City – A total 49 number of cases on land grabbing and related disputations have been concluded in three months, from January to March 2023, by the Edo State Private Properties Protection Committee.
A release signed by Oshireku Otokunrin Esq., Secretary of the Committee and made available to the Press indicated that the Committee had received hundreds of petitions on land grabbing and related issues from individuals and organizations across communities in Edo state.
While some petitions were slated for prosecution, many were fully settled, even as a few cases were abandoned, 5 were struck out for lacking merit and 4 of the cases were subjudice.
The Committee , sitting in Government House in Benin City hears, on average, 28 cases at every of its sitting.
Meanwhile, Hon. Justice Alero Edodo-Eruaga (Retd),Chairman of the Committee and members of her team have been commended for the way and manner the Edo State Private Properties Protection Committee under her watch had been dispensing justice “without fear or favour.”
According to madam Izuagie Igbinoba Ilonre, one of the Petitioners whose cases were settled under the period in perspective, the Committee had done a tremendous work in restoring peace and progress in Edo communities.
Madam Ilonre enjoined the Committee to remain committed to the ideals of the charge given to it by the Edo State Government in dispensing justice in land grabbing cases brought before the Committee.
The Executive Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki, constituted the Edo State Private Property Protection Law 2021 Implementation Committee on December 2, 2021, to among other duties, support government’s efforts in checking the activities of land grabbers in the state.
