BENIN CITY- Edo State Executive Members of Labour Party led by the chairman Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi have outrightly rejected the local government elections that was conducted on September 2 ,2023 by Edo State Independent Electoral Commission saying it is regrettable and unacceptable to the Party.
Com Ogbaloi stated the party’s position when he led a peaceful protest to the Nigeria Union of Journalist secretariat in Benin City
In a protest letter presented to the the chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalist Edo State council ,signed by Com.Ogbaloi and the secretary Com . Akhere Frederick said the purported conduct of the local government elections allegedly held on the 2nd of September,2023 was marred with electoral malpractice which involved violence ,non availability of EDSIEC staff and voting materials.
He further said the election was characterized by the use of vigilante groups to perpetuate violence ,release of voting results in units and wards where voting did not hold ,under supply of ballot papers ,diversion of voting materials and other electoral vices perpetuated by EDSIEC in collaboration and active connivance with Obaseki led administration all in favour of the PDP .
“It is our well considered opinion that the purported election was a charade hence they decided to embarked on a peaceful protest to express our dissatisfaction,it is not acceptable as same is offensive, barbaric, out modelled practice dangerous to democracy and against good conscience, equity and natural justice”.he noted
The chairman said it is even more spurious,that EDSIEC has also vehemently refused to give the party the Certified True Copy of the election results that was declared ,for them to use in their Court/Tribunal pursuit of their legitimate claim of denial of their fundamental rights and non-inclusion in the supposed local government elections
He said the party is calling for the withdrawal of the certificate of return issued to PDP candidates as the party also reject in its entirety the outcome of the elections
In his response,the chairman of Nigeria Union Journalist Edo State council, Comrade Festus Alenkhe commended the labour party executives and members for the peaceful protest
He however reaffirmed that journalists does not take side with any group but rather try as much as possible to balance the reports the way it is from both parties before taking it to the public ,he assured the protesters that the issues raised will be given wide publicity .
